CanSkate

CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages. CanSkate participants are enrolled in a program focused on fun, participation and basic skill development. Lessons are given in groups by certified professional coaches. These professional coaches are supported by trained program assistants. Skaters progress at their own pace, and coaches make sessions active with teaching materials, music and a range of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the program that powers all Skate Canada skating programs. The skills taught are fundamental for ice sports such as hockey, ringette, speed skating, and figure skating. ​

Why register for CanSkate? 

At Lakeshore Skating Club (LSC), our CanSkate programs are suitable for children aged 4 years and up. CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was developed by experts to teach fundamental skating skills in a progressive and logical manner. 
When you or your child registers for a CanSkate program at a local Skate Canada club, you automatically become a member of Skate Canada, the national governing body for figure skating in Canada. The benefits of CanSkate membership include:

Skate Canada Helmet use policy

The Proper Equipment

It is mandatory that all skaters up to and including Badge 5 registered in a CanSkate program must wear a CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved HOCKEY helmet. Hockey helmets and face protectors sold in Canada must meet safety standards set by the Canadian Standards Association. Please look for the CSA logo on all hockey helmets prior to purchasing.

BICYCLE, SKI HELMETS OR MULTI‐PURPOSE SPORT HELMETS ARE NOT PERMITTED as they do not provide the proper protection against falls on ice. Face masks are not mandatory; however young skaters may benefit from the added protection. Any skater without the proper helmet will be refused access to the ice.

CanSkate Stages

There are 6 CanSkate stages. Once a child completes each stage, they are awarded a badge. Within each stage, there are three main components: agility, balance, and control. Ribbons are awarded for each mastered. Once a child achieves all three of the ribbons in each level – they are awarded their badge. Ribbons can be awarded from different stages if a particular component is felt advanced enough – even though the stage the child is currently in, is not complete. Once the stage is complete badges can then be sewn on to the child’s shirt for all to see and admire! Now your child will begin to work on completing the next stage up.
